80% of women will develop a fibroid in their lifetime and some will experience horrible effects from them and some may never notice they are there at all. However, having fibroids is a sign that something is going on in the body, it isn't just that, "you are a women and this is what you have to deal with." I don't believe this and more and more research is starting to prove this. No one really knows exactly what causes fibroids but they tend to notice a correlation between fibroids and other factors such as:
Hormones
The Pill
Pregnancy
Genetics
Stress
It turns out that diet can be one the things that can help with the development and growth of fibroids. Dr. Allan Warshowsky, talks about how the Standard American Diet is not helping as it doesn't hold adequate nutrition and harmful chemical additives. Many of us fuel our diets with fast-food that have been convinced my advertising is real food. These are filled with sugar or artificial sweeteners, too much caffeine, unhealthy saturated fats, empty carbohydrates, and chemicals (75). If we really think about, when we eat that bag of gold fish, donut for breakfast, or pop tarts, what nutritional value is truly in it? None, none at all other than refined carbohydrates that give nothing back because they aren't natural foods.
But Dr. Warshowsky, offers us an explanation and some solutions! For those of us with fibroids, we often have times breaking down excess and harmful oestrogen in our bodies which might make us oestrogen dominant. An important vitamin that helps this is B6, which helps the liver metabolise esrtrogen efficiently and restore hormone balance. However, the processing of grains and many of the artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives can inhibit this from happening. Magnesium and zinc are also essential but are often removed during food processing as well.
He recommends staying on the outside of the grocery store, so what does this mean? This means buying real whole food. Going into the sections that aren't packaged away and have a list of what's in it on the back. The real foods that you can touch and make into your own foods at home. These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts & seeds, and animal proteins. However, it is recommended by many doctors that if you choose to eat animal based products such as beef try getting the organic, grass-fed and grass finished products. The ways that I have decided to help my body is by eating foods that my body is meant to eat.
I decided to get my allergies tested and try to make majority of my meals at home! Turns out I am allergic to quite a fair bit of nuts and seeds, yeast, but also egg whites surprisingly. If you have the availability and finances, many doctors recommend finding out what you are allergic or sensitive to because it just means you are putting extra work on your gut and liver. Your gut and liver have to go through the process of trying to break that food down and if your body is incapable, it leaves a strain on these organs along with others. Try eating more of your homemade meals and finding out what you enjoy to eat and not eat. It definitely takes a transition but when we eat what our bodies want us to eat. I do believe that there is a massive difference in our health!
